William Hill When A Win Is Not A Win

This is going to be a quick post concerning a bet I placed with William Hill last night. You see, last night was the big A League soccer final. It was Brisbane Roar against Western Sydney Wanderers. I had this gut feeling that Brisbane Roar was going to win. Heck, who am I kidding, I know shit about soccer, my son told be to put some money on Brisbane Roar. So that’s what I did.

I got my iPhone 5s out, fired up the William Hill app and placed $20 on Brisbane Roar to win. The odds were 2.17 so a win should have paid me $43.40. Man, I tell you I was on the end of my seat for that game. I was pissed no end when WSW scored the first goal, and elated when the Roar scored the equaliser in the dying minutes of the game.

Brisbane Roar winAs it turns out Brisbane Roar claimed their third title in four years with a 2-1 victory over the Western

after extra time in the A-League grand final. It just about brought the house down at a packed out Suncorp Stadium, not to mention the screams in my lounge. The cream on the cake was the fact that I placed money on them and won, or so I believed.

I waited to this morning to see if they deposited the winnings into my account, as nothing happened last night. When that didn’t eventuate I shot them an email…

Hi, I placed a bet on the Brisbane Roar vs Western Sydney Wanderers game. I placed $20 to win on Brisbane Roar, which they did. What is confusing is I still haven’t received my winnings?

Peter

This was their reply…

Dear Peter,

Thank you for your email.

As per our terms and condition for the Win-Draw-Win market, all bets within the market are settled at the end of normal time, 90 minutes.

As the score at the end of the 90 minutes was 1-1, the loss was the correct selection in the market.

Hope this clears up your query.

Kind Regards,

So, when is a win not a win? It appears to be during a grand final as all bets are settled at the end of the game and does not include the actual results. Sounds a bit rough doesn’t it. But then them are the rules and we have to live by the rules right.

Anyway, I asked for some more clarification and they sent me this link. Specifically, the rule states;

“227. All soccer bets will be settled in accordance with OPTA Index results unless otherwise specified. All bets on football are automatically on the basis of 90 minutes play unless otherwise stated for that particular market. 90 minutes play includes time added on by referee for stoppages.”

Just thought you guys should know. Too bad I didn’t bet on a draw isn’t it? 😉

How To Bet And Win

Truth be told it’s virtually impossible to always bet and win. Lets face it, gambling is hardly ever a sure thing. The usual outcome of placing a bet is that you’re going to lose, right? This is especially true at casino’s, whether in real life or online. When I visit the casino I always allocate a certain amount to lose. Even when I win I tend to pump my winnings back. Reckon what I need is to invest in a Gamble Box.

Bet And Win In Sports Betting

This is why I decided to go the sports betting route on my online sports betting venture. My sport of choice is naturally the AFL because I know more about the AFL than any other sports. I wrote about a couple of my bets in the Sportingbet Review post. Because I am all about Responsible Gambling I allowed myself a $30 budget for the month. I blew that in three weeks. What does that tell me? Simply that I don’t know as much as I thought I did about the AFL teams. Also that I let my emotion over my team, the Adelaide Crows, overrule any logical betting procedure. Emotion should never play a part when trying to bet and win.

bet and win on the crowsSo, what do I need to do? I need to study the form of all the teams properly. When placing my next bet I have to be more aware of injuries, performances, whether or not the home advantage is enough to get them over the line. I’m sure if I take all this and more into consideration I will have more of a chance when it comes to betting and actually winning.

Bet And Win On Sportingbet

I like Sportingbet because their app makes sports betting online so easy. The fact that they accept PayPal is also a bonus, although it would have been nice if they also accepted Neteller. Oh well, they may take them on later.

Anyway, if you’re pretty good at your footy picks then you may want to have a go at placing some sports bets online. They don’t have to be big wagers either because sure you can win more if you bet big but then you can also lose more. For me, when it comes to betting on sports online it’s more about the extra thrill of watching a game you placed a bet on than anything else. Naturally the added thrill of winning would be pretty cool too, which is why I intend to do a lot more research before placing the next bets.

Something else to keep in mind is that, usually, it’s the long shot that pays the most. So, if you think that in a particular game the underdog actually has a chance of winning it might be worth placing a few bucks on them as a side bet.

So, what’s your tactics when it comes to placing a bet on your favourite sport?

Responsible Gambling Is Important

If you’re considering becoming part of the online betting community then it’s important you familiarise yourself with responsible gambling. Sure having a punt on your favourite sports team is fun. Sure placing a bet at the races can be exciting. Be that as it may, it’s not worth it if responsible gambling is beyond your reach.

I have to admit that when creating this site I worried about people who had a problem with responsible gambling. Then I thought they would still have a gambling problem whether it existed or not,  Also, it wouldn’t be fair to the countless multitude who get a kick out gambling responsibly. I decided the only fair thing to do would be to provide them with the information as which to which are the best online sports gambling sites to join, as well as outlining the perils of not gambling responsibly.

What Is Responsible Gambling

  1. If you’re the sort of person that has to keep gambling in an attempt to recoup your losses then you are a problem gambler. Responsible gambling is when you’re able to stop anytime you want. Gambling to you is just another form of entertainment and not something that you are compelled to do.
  2. Responsible gamblers only use money they can afford. They don’t use money that was meant for food or rent. They certainly don’t use money earmarked for things like paying off the home loan or a college fund.
  3. Responsible gambling is when you don’t have the need to borrow money just so you could place a bet. You certainly wouldn’t  pawn stuff to feed your gambling needs.
  4. They do not have the need to gamble for hours on end
  5. They do not go beyond their gambling budget. They set a certain amount and once that is reached they don’t have a problem stopping.
  6. They do not hide the fact from family and friends

So, you have to sit back and ask yourself, do you have a gambling problem?

responsible gambling

You Have A Gambling Problem If……..

  1. …you don’t know when to stop. You will continue to gamble until you’ve run out of cash.
  2. …you find that you spend more time gambling than socialising with family and friends
  3. … you’re feeling guilty about your gambling habit. I know when I’m feeling guilty it’s because I’ve done something wrong. As far as problem gambling goes its better to remove the guilt by stopping rather than letting it eat away at you until its too late?
  4. … you’re sneaking off to lay a bet or play the pokies
  5. … you have to convince yourself that you don’t have a problem

Just remember, if you have a gambling problem you will ruin more than than your own life You’re also ruining the lives of those who love you. Don’t allow yourself to fall into the trap of becomming a problem gambler. Learn to recognise the signs before they turn into a problem. If you feel you need help just remember it takes more strength to admit you need help than to deny it. Admitting it will be a great hurdle. Once you’ve done that you can seek help.
