Top Sports Betting Tips

As you all know I’m new at this sports betting lark. That doesn’t mean I’m not learning some sports betting tips along the way. It’s kind of like playing the stock market. You could just jump right in and invest your hard earned money on stocks in the hope that you’ve made the right choices and that you would profit on the sale of said stock. Problem is when it didn’t work out you could lose big money. That’s why they say you should start paper trading first.

I suppose some would say that a good sports betting tip would be to a sports betting version of paper trading. Where you place make believe bets on paper until you got the hang of things. I didn’t go that route. Nope, I couldn’t see the point in that at all. The main reason I place bets on my favourite sports is so that I get a bigger kick watching those games that I placed a wager on.

3 Top Sports Betting Tips

  • Bet Small In The Beginning: Remembering our responsible gambling rule, one should never bet more than they can afford to lose. In the beginning I’d try to cut my losses by betting even smaller wagers. I’ve bet as little as one dollar on certain games, and usually it was within my betting budget.
  • Know Your Sport: This is probably the most important sports betting tip I can offer. I remember when years ago I got sucked into joining a Footy Pool. I knew stuff all about footy in those days and that lead to me losing consistently. It suddenly came to me that I should start watching the matches so that I could make an informed decision over the outcome. Little did I know how much I would come to love the AFL.Knowing the sport is important because not knowing means you can’t take into consideration all the variables that can have an outcome on the game, race or whatever you having a bet on.
  • Don’t Double Up To Win Back Your Losses: I’ve seen gamblers at the casino lose a bet and then double their initial wager so they could win back their losses. That didn’t work and so they would increase their bet even more, again to win back their losses. This may work if you have bottomless pockets but more often than not you’re going to blow your gambling budget in record time. If you lose a bet you lose a bet. So what. A loss doesn’t mean you have to get it back the next time you place a bet. This frame of mind will only ruin your betting experience.

As for the top Sports Betting Sites. That’s easy! You just need to read my Top Online Sports Betting Sites post.

Sports Betting Budget To Keep You Out Of Trouble

I mentioned having a sports betting budget in a few of my posts. I’ve even mentioned how Bet365 has a great feature which helps you to maintain your sports betting budget. That post was simply called Bet365. It spoke of a great little feature that bet365 offers it’s members. As a member you can specify how much money you’re allowed to deposit per week. So if you have a $40 per month sports betting budget you just set it for $10 a week.

A Sports Betting Budget Is Important

A sports betting budget is important for all responsible gamblers. Not having one could get you into strife. The sort of strife I talked about in my problem gamblers post. Remember, when placing any sports bet you never bet more than you can afford to lose. This is very important, Doing otherwise will only wreck your favourite sports telecast rather than enhance it. Having a sports betting budget will ensure you never make that mistake. You can blow the whole budget on bet if you think it’s a sure thing. But, if you lose you have to wait until your next budget period kicks in.

sports betting budgetA sports better must never, ever put his livelihood or his family’s livelihood at risk by betting more than he can afford to lose. When your budget is spread so thin that you can’t afford to to have a sports betting budget there is only two things you can do. The first it you simply do not place a bet until your financial situation changes. The second is to change your financial situation by finding enough savings to have a small sports betting budget.

When finding savings, a responsible gambler would not look at any cost cuttings that would affect his loved ones. Any savings should only come from cost cutting measures that affect him alone. So, what savings measure are open to you.

  • Smokers can easily find the most savings. Simply cutting back on one carton of smokes a week can easily support a nice sports betting budget. Cut back by more than a pack a week and you find even more saving. Quit altogether and you will never look back. Not only will you have your sports betting budget you’ll also improve your health and pay your mortgage off a lot quicker. Your family will thank you for it.
  • Lunches: If you’re one to buy your lunch at work, taking a cut lunch with you a few times week will easily save you enough money, with some to spare.
  • Doing your own home maintenance can also save a lot of cash. Fix those leaking taps yourself instead of calling a plumber. Cut your own lawns and maintain your gardens instead of paying someone else to do it.

Most of these measures, well maybe not so much the last one, will have an instant money saving effect. There are other measures that may save money over time but I’m not sure I’d want to wait that long. Having said that you should always strive to save money whenever you can because that extra cash can always be used as savings for those times when an emergency comes your way.

Can you think of any other cost savings measure that you could use.

Dealing With Problem Gamblers

Do you know anyone is a problem gambler. If you’re not sure what a problem gambler is you should read my post on Responsible Gambling. I actually work with someone who is a problem gambler. He tells me he has spent thousand on the pokies. He even said it had cost him his relationship with his almost bride to be. I told him he had to take control of his life and not let the pokies take control of him. Unfortunately for many it is not as easy as that and they should really seek professional help. Many can not deal with problem gambling on their own. That post on responsible gambling also has some links to helpful problem gambling sites.

I’ve also found this article on problem gambling by the Salvation Army to be very informative. I pulled that image from the article because it shows just how emotionally drained problem gamblers can be.

As the article explains a problem gambler does not want to be lectured to. Doing so only raises their defences. That does not meant that you can’t approach them to tell them you are there if they need someone to talk to.

  • Something you should not do  is to feed their need to gamble. Don’t  put them in situations where they can feed their urge to gamble. If they’re heading towards the pokies in  the pub try to lead them in another direction. Better still, don’t got to an establishment where you know they have pokies.
  • Never ever bring up any type of gambling topic. Don’t brag about some bet that came good for you or how you’re going to place a bet on any sort of sporting event.
  • What you should do is to let them know how important they are to you and how their gambling problem is negatively affecting that relationship.
  • You have to let them deal with the resulting problems that their gambling has gotten them into. Do not lend them money to pay off their debts. They’ll probably gamble it away. Do not lie to protect them as it will have the opposite effect.
  • Do not turn your backs on a problem gambler as this will only exasperate the problem. Spending time with them, away from temping situations, may help them to steer away from their need to gamble, especially if their gambling started out of boredom or a way to relieve stress.
  • Talking to someone with a gambling problem, without lecturing them, may help them to see why they turned to gambling in the first place.

I found this video on gambling addiction.

Problem Gamblers  Overcoming The Urge To Gamble

The video is brilliant. You actually see problem gamblers talking about what turned them into problem gamblers. Knowing the cause can help to resolve the problem. It also dispels a lot of the gambling myths. Knowledge is power.
