The Melbourne Cup, the race that stops a nation is only a day away. That being the case I think I should place a bet tonight, especially as I have to work tomorrow. The problem is which horse to put my money on. I know in my last post which included some tips on how to pick the Melbourne Cup winner, I mentioned that the favourite rarely wins but I think listing theMelbourne Cup favourites will help me to narrow down the selection of horses that I want to back.

I did read somewhere that out of 153 races a Melbourne Cup favourite has run the race 34 times. That’s a 22% chance of actually winning. So maybe renowned punter John Beedle of Ashfield, who I quoted in my last post, wasn’t totally correct. I mean a 22% chance of winning is pretty good. A lot better than picking a horse at random.

Melbourne Cup Favourites 2014

I’ve decided to place my bet using Bet365 for this race so all odds I quote in this post will be Bet365 odds.

  • Admire Rakti: This horse is definitely the favourite, winning the Caulfield Cup last month. They say distance is not a problem. At 6.00 the odds aren’t all that bad for Admire Rakti.
  • Lucia Valentina: Was second to Admire Rakti in the Caulfield Cup and I read on TheNewDaily that mares have won 5 of the last 16 races. Her odds are 7.50
  • Signoff: The NewDaily also said of Signoff “…snuck into the Cup field with an effortless win in what was a weak Lexus Stakes on Derby Day. There is a sense of timing about this bloke. He is peaking at the right time and gets into the field with just 51.5kg (Joe Moreira will ride 0.5kg over). Odds also 7.50.
  • Fawkner: Owner Lloyd Williams thinks he has this horse primed to win the Melbourne Cup.At 8.00 Fawkner pays somewhat better than the favourite.

So there you have it. I noticed also that Bet365 odds were better than those quoted in most sources I’ve read.

Now comes the crunch. Which horse to put my money on. Seeing as how I didn’t actually place a bet last week, and sticking to my responsible gambling criteria, I actually have $20 betting money up my sleeve. Rather than placing it all on one horse I’ve decided to back two horses.

Melbourne Cup Favourites Bet Of The Week

  • Admire Rakti: I placed $5 for a win at 6.00 and $5 for a place at 2.10. A win will get me $40.50 whereas a place will get me $10.50.
  • Fawkner: Fawkner was my second horse of choice and again I placed $5 for a win at 8.00 and $5 for a place at 2.50. If Fawkner wins I’ll get $52.50 whereas a place will get me $12.50.

If both horses manage a place I’ll be up $3.00. Not much but better than a loss.

Over to you guys. Who are you backing for the Melbourne Cup?

How To Pick A Winning Horse For The Melbourne Cup

How to pick a winning horseBecause the Melbourne Cup is just days away I thought I would do another Melbourne Cup post. My first post was Melbourne Cup Online Betting 2014 which listed all horses racing in the Melbourne Cup. The second post was all about the Melbourne Cup Hot Sports Babes. The last post was about How To Bet On The Melbourne Cup. That particular post listed my favourite online betting agencies that I love to use for placing online bets, whether it’s on the AFL or the Melbourne Cup. Now it’s time to give you some tips on ho to pick a winning horse for the Melbourne Cup.

How To Pick A Winning Horse

Before we get to the serious job of how to pick a winning horse I thought I would start of with a little joke about how this particular bloke got some inside bet tips on the Melbourne Cup.

It all started when this bloke was having a few drinks by himself at a the Crown Casino in Melbourne when he met up with a striking but quite short and slim young woman.

They got on famously and ended up in bed.

The next morning she told him she was a jockey and that if he came to the races at Flemington that day, she’d tip him the winner of each race she was riding in by giving him a sign as she rode out of the saddling paddock.

In Race 2, she rode out rubbing both her boobs.

The bloke looked through the race book and found ‘Two Abreast’ on which he placed $100 at 5-1.

It won by two lengths.

In Race 4 she rode out rubbing her fingers round her eyes..

He put the lot on ‘Eyeliner’ at 10-1 and was then $5000 in front.

In the last race she came out standing up in the stirrups and rubbing her crotch..

He backed nothing.

After the races, he met up with her and thanked her for the winners in races 2 and 4.

‘What about ‘Itchy Mickey’ in the sixth?’, she asked. ‘It paid a fortune’

‘Shit’, he said, ‘I thought you were telling me the favourite was scratched!’

While that was funny it doesn’t usually work in real life. That’s why I’ve managed to find some tips that may help you to pick a winning horse in the Melbourne Cup. These tips are from long time punter John Beedle of Ashfield.

Just keep in mind that these tips won’t guarantee you a win in the Melbourne Cup but it may increase your chances a bit.

Tips On Picking The Winning Horse

  • According to John the most important things to look at are the state of the track, the experience of the horse and the betting. Once the field is set, look up the odds in the paper and make your pick from within the top six horses. Don’t back the favourite, they rarely win and lots of other punters will be betting on them anyway. (Good thing I read that because I was going to bet on the favourite. Just goes to show you how much I know)
  • His second tip is to make sure the horse has already won a race over at least 2400m. This is because the Melbourne Cup is 3200m and if a horse can’t manage 2400m it hasn’t a hope in hell of winning the Cup.
  • If rain happens to fall on the track you want to make sure that your horse can handle a wet track. It’s probably a good idea to research this way before the race starts so you’re prepared for anything.
  • “I’d say place a bet each way (that is, a bet that your horse either wins or places). If you make a bet at A$4 – A$7, you probably have about the same chance of winning as the favourite […] but you stand to gain more money. (But I thought he said the favourite rarely wins? Oh well, as long as I can win more money)

The worst thing you can do while at the races is trying to chase your money. By this I mean if you bet $100 on a horse and lose that you do the same thing on the next race in an effort to win your money back. You then lose that bet so you bet even more on the next race. Not only is this the complete opposite of responsible gambling it will turn what is supposed to be an enjoyable time into the day from hell!

Having a great time at the Cup is what the Melbourne Cup is all about. Your’e supposed to have fun on that day and betting only what you can afford to lose will help you do that. That’s probably why a lot of punters don’t give a hoot about studying the racing form trying to pick the right horse. Some will just pick one out of the blue. I know one woman that closes her eyes and places a pen over the racing form and whichever horse it landed on that was the horse she would put her money on.

Some Melbourne Cup punters choose their horse solely on the horses name. It could be because the name is way out of this world, like Who Shot Thebarman, or perhaps because it has some sort of personal value. Sort of like the Cox Plate race last week. I would have been a winner if I had picked Adelaide, being from Adelaide and all.

How will you pick your Melbourne Cup Winner? Who do you plan to place a bet on?

  • I can take advantage of any special deals they’re offering at any particular time
  • If one site is down when I’m about to place a bet I can choose one of the other ones so I’m assured of not missing out on an important bet.
