World Matchplay Darts Results So Far

After my post on the current World Matchplay I thought to get into the feel of the sport I’d give my 11 year old nephew a game of darts. We just had a simple game of 1 to bullseye where you start on the number one and finish on a bullseye. Naturally I won, and I thought I was pretty good. But then I’ve never watched the professional dart players play. I didn’t know how good they were until I saw a video of Phil Taylor. You can see that video at the bottom of this post.

What was remarkable about this bloke was that he produced a 9 dart finish on Wednesday. This makes it the second time he’s performed this feat. The first one being in 2002. He scored 180 with his first three darts, 177 with his second three and 144 with the final three.

Darts Game Rules For World Matchplay

I had a quick look at the rules these guys have to follow. Heck, I didn’t have much choice considering I had no idea whatsoever Simon Whitlock Professional Darts Playerabout what dart game they play at Matchplay. From what I could gather they play 501, but rather than starting at the number one they start from 501 and work there way backwoods, finishing with a double. So, in Phil Taylor’s dart game when he finished off with 144 he probably got triple 20 with the first two darts and finished off with a double 12!

Aussie Simon Whitlock is doing pretty well at the World Matchplay tournament. Although he had a bad start he has managed to secure a place in the semi finals. The other three contenders include Michael van Gerwen, Dave Chisnall and of course, Phil Taylor.

For a complete rundown how things are standing so far in this years World Matchplay I reckon the Bleacher Report article is your best bet. Speaking of betting. If you’re thinking of placing a bet on the World Matchplay, or on the Commonwealth games you can’t go wrong with William Hill.

Where To Place A Bet On World Matchplay

World Matchplay 2014 Dart Tournament

Of all the sports you place a bet on I never thought that darts would be one of them. Sure your mates might place a bet amongst each other over a local darts game. Sort of like, ‘hey Darryl, I bet you ten bucks you can’t hit the bullseye’, type of thing. Sure I knew that darts was more than just a sport played in a pub. I even knew that there are tournaments that are held world wide. Do they call them tournaments? But that people could actually place a bet on a darts game through their bookie.

But then maybe placing a bet on a dart game is only something you can do online. Hopefully someone can leave me a comment confirming whether or not you can place a bet on a dart game though the TAB or some other bricks and mortar sportsbook.

If you love the game of darts you probably know that one of the biggest tournaments is being held this weekend. I’m talking about World Matchplay held at Blackpool - Winter Gardensthe World Match Play. Yep, this once a year tournament is on this weekend. If you have some loose change available you may even want to book a spot at the Empress Ballroom which you’ll find at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool.

If you leave right away you’ll still get to the World Matchplay in time as it’s being held from July 19-27. For those of you who are unable to go to Blackpool to watch the World Matchplay live you’ll be happy to know it is being shown on Foxtel.
