Australian Government Restrictions To Sports Betting

A few of my readers have asked me why certain promotions are no longer available to them. They are now regretting not taking up the offer before it was unfairly, what they believe, removed from their grasp. The short answer is it all has to do with the new Australian Government restrictions. Being affiliated with the sports betting agencies I represent they’ve all sent me emails to ensure that I am complying with the new Government restrictions. Here is part of the one sent to me from Sportingbet.

Government Restrictions In Sports Betting

Dear Affiliate,

Important Notice to Affiliates in relation to change in Copy and Creative – Government Restrictions

As you may be aware, legislation in New South Wales and South Australia prohibits gambling advertising considered to be offering inducements to bet and/or to open betting accounts.

Similar legislation prohibiting the advertising of inducements to open a betting account exists in the states of Victoria and Western Australia.

To ensure that the requirements of the various state and territory legislation are complied with, Sportingbet and Centrebet have updated its creative and copy relating to promotions.

Please ensure that you are using the most recent Sportingbet and Centrebet creative and copy on your websites.

Is Sports Betting Legal In Australia?

The answer to this is yes. As Aussies we’re lucky enough to be allowed to gamble on the Internet. While online gambling is legal in Australia I’m sure the Government restrictions are there to protect problem gamblers. However, I very much doubt it will do any good. Still, the guys from Canberra have to be seen as trying to do the right thing.

Personally I don’t believe these restriction will prevent people from signing on with any of the online betting agencies. People who want to be able to place a bet online will join regardless of whether or not any incentive is offered. All this legislation will do is rip off the poor Aussies who live in those restricted States. These offers are merely there to entice prospective new customers to join one particular online betting agency over another. All this legislation does is remove one factor of the competitiveness between online bookies.

So in essence government legislation affects Australian gambling operators more than it does the punters. One way punters are affected though is in regards to live bets. While we can go online to bet on sports we are not allowed to place any live bets online. Aussie punters can only do this by using the phone. While I’m sure this inconvenience will stop some punters from live betting it won’t affect the serious punter at all.

Aussies Love To Bet

I’m sure that the Aussies love of betting is only part of the reason why the Government does not ban gambling all together. They know Aussies would not stand for it. Not to mention doing so would hurt Government revenue and that’s something they would never do.

While the Australian Government overseas all forms of gambling, both online and offline, individual states have their own rules. In case you’re interested here are each States respective gambling rules.

I Won A Bet On England vs Italy World Cup Game

I won a bet on England vs Italy World Cup Game

I woke up at 6am this morning so that I could watch the England vs Italy World Cup game at the Newton Church hall. After watching Australia lose against Chili, lucky I didn’t bet on that one, I was really hoping that Italy would triumph over England. Why, being an Aussie and all? Basically because my parents were born in Italy. So I barrack for two teams in the World Cup. Naturally when Australia plays Italy I want Australia to win. After all, I am a dinky di Aussie. 😉

What made the game even more interesting was the fact that I had placed a bet on that game. It was actually this weeks Bet Of The Week.

I won A Bet On England vs Italy

As you can see from the screenshot from my Sportingbet app I actually won the bet. I could have bet straight out on Italy to win which would have paid more but I decided to hedge my bet. I did this by placing a double chance bet. I wrote about that on my What Is A Double Chance post. That way if Italy lost and England won I would still win something.

The only way I could lose was if the match ended in a draw. So, you can imagine my apprehension when Daniel Sturridge scored the equaliser, the first goal being scored by Claudio Marchisio. My heart was in my mouth for the rest of the game. The excitement did not abate even when Mario Balotelli scored the next goal.

I tell you, when Andrea Pirlo‘s shot at goal hit the bar it was all In could do contain myself. Why so much excitement? It’s like I said, for me to win the bet either Italy or England had to win. A draw would result in my losing the wager.

As it turns out Italy won 2-1 against England and I won the bet. Yeah, I know your looking at that image and saying to yourself, so what, I didn’t win all that much. And you are so right! I didn’t win much dollar wise. But for me it’s not the win so much as the added excitement I get from placing a wager on particular sport. Whether it’s an AFL game or, in this situation, the World Cup. Even if I lose it doesn’t negate the added excitement it brings to the game. naturally it does make the win even sweeter.

Did you place a bet on the England vs Italy game? If so, how did you go?

How Much To Bet?

I’m sure there are a lot of people out there who want to know how much to bet on any given sport. For me betting on sports is more for fun than anything else. If I win it’s all good but if I lose I’m not too fussed as win or lose, it added to the thrill of the game. Whether you bet for fun or profit you should always remember to gamble responsibly! Therefore you should never gamble more than you can afford.

I know that I’m never going to become rich with the amount that I wager on sports but then I also know I’m not going to go broke and how much to betthat it won’t hamper my lifestyle or threaten the way my family lives. If you’re thinking of getting into serious betting you should remember that the odds always favour the bookie. It’s not often that the bookies have a bad day which is probably why the day bookies lost £25 million. This is a rarity.

If you’re a regular reader of this blog you know that I allow myself $40 for the month. You may want to set a bigger budget for yourself. As long as you don’t exceed that budget you will never get into trouble financially. Remember my betting strategy is all about the entertainment value of the bet. If I wanted to take a more serious betting stance I would have to raise my betting pool. So how do I do that without blowing my gambling budget?

After thinking about this I thought the best way to do it would be to multiply my $40 monthly budget by 12. This gives me a yearly budget of $480. I reckon I would add another twenty bucks to that to make it an even $500. This will give me more money for my online sports betting. I would deposit $500 into one of my favourite online betting agencies, either bet365 or Sportingbet, taking note of the time of the deposit so as to give myself a year before the next deposit.

So now I have more betting money for my bets meaning I can place larger bets but how do I manage this to make it last as long as possible. Again, how much to bet on any one game? What if I only allow myself a percentage for each bet? Lets say 5%. That means I can place $25 on my first bet. If I lose I’m left with $475 so for my next bet I’m allowed to bet $23.75 (475×5%). However, let’s say that my first bet paid off and it paid 2.6 (my England vs Italy World Cup Wager) winning me $65! That lifts my betting pool to $540 ($475 + $65) This means I have now have $27 available for my next bet.

Of course, you may be interested in a way to increase your betting bankroll by becoming a new member of one of the following.

  • Sportingbet $500 Free Bet: If you meet the right criteria Sportingbet will match your deposit up to $500 giving you a $1000 bankroll doubling the size of your wagers.
  • bet365: Already a member of Sportingbet? The why not join bet365 who will match your deposit up to the value of $200!
  • Tomwaterhouse: Not as good a deal as the other two but they will match your first bet up to the value of $250.

Keep in mind that being a member of more than one online betting agency has certain advantages. Like taking advantage of any special deals they’re offering or checking who is offering the better odds and placing a wager with them. Also if one is down for whatever reason you can fall back on the other one to place a bet.

As long as I don’t lose consistently I should be able to make my budget last the year and with some luck I may even have some left over which will add to next years gambling budget. What do you think of that idea? This could well be your next sports betting strategy,
